Stress is a very complex issue. And despite our greatest intentions, all of us will experience stress from time to time.
Stress is defined as, “a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.” Stress, in of itself, is not a bad thing. However, handling stress poorly, could become bad for you.
How do you know if you are handling your stress poorly?
Review the signs that you’re not handling your stress well below.
Poor stress management is often demonstrated through lack of sleep. If you are doing things like worrying a lot or you are unable to do things that help with stress management like monitor your diet and exercise, chances are, you’re not handling stress very well. When you don’t handle stress well, it makes it difficult for you to do other important things well including sleep.
Your relationships are strained. Even if you don’t notice your poor stress management tactics, chances are your family and peers do. They may respond by being negative themselves towards you or even worst, by withdrawing from you. Worst case scenario, they may decide not to associate with you at all if you are unable to get your stress under control.
You find yourself being angry often. If you don’t know how to manage stress, then the burden of it will undoubtedly eventually make you angry. This can be observed through having anger outbursts, becoming socially withdrawn, facing uncontrollable crying spells and depression. It’s best that if you don’t know how to manage your anger, it’s worth anger management classes.
